Using Visuals as Resources in an Engineering Context
The effective use of images, graphics or objects for engineering tasks is expressed in the ability to use Visual Media in an effective way, not only enhancing individual capabilities, but also for their professional interactions with colleagues and other interested parties, for their individual professional development and for the collective good and continuous innovation in the organisation and the engineering profession. In doing so, existing images, graphics and products become means to help reaching specific goals according to the engineering process. This competence area therefore describes the act of working with visuals as resources.
Engineers tends to use visuals for their tasks they are involved, since the definition of shapes of a design to analyse data when solving complex technical problems. Therefore, a plenty of different graphic as well as physical resources are applied. Engineering Drawings are the most specific visual they use, as well as CAD models. These are required for the definition of a design. Also, they use mock-ups, which can be physical or digital, for evaluating design concepts. Schemes and diagrams are used for the definition of a problem.
We can say that visuals cover all the engineering activities, and we must be competent to use each tool accordingly.
